Publish/subscribe communication model has become an indispensable part of the Web 2.0 applications, such as social networks and news syndication. Recently, the public awareness of privacy and access control issues spurred the research towards the decentralization of these services. Consequently, it became necessary to design a truly distributed publish/subscribe system that scales to massive number of nodes, publications and subscriptions. Despite the fact that the field of distributed publish/subscribe is not new, there exist very few systems that can provide a genuinely scalable service, and these solutions mostly fall into the category of topic-based publish/subscribe model. The content-based solutions, however, are still suffering from restricted subscription schemes, heavy and unbalanced load on the participating nodes, or excessively high matching complexity. We address these problems by redesigning a distributed contentbased publish/subscribe system and constructing it by using only those components which are proven to be scalable and can withstand the workloads of massive sizes. Our novel publish/subscribe solution, Vinifera, requires only a bounded node degree and as we show, through simulations, it scales well to large network sizes and remains efficient under highly complex subscription patterns. Furthermore, we show that Vinifera outperforms an existing state-of-the-art technique, by (i) generating only a third of the traffic overhead in the network, (ii) delivering the events up to four times faster, (iii) fairly balancing the load over the existing nodes, (iv) tolerating failures in the network, and (v) providing delivery guarantees even under intensive event publications.
